Correct! Keratin is a protein produced by keratinocytes in the epidermis of the skin as well as in pili (hairs) and your nails. Starting with cells in the stratum granulosum, keratinohyaline (a precursor to keratin) is formed and then slowly converted to true keratin. Since keratin waterproofs cells, they shrivel up and die, producing the characteristic flakey layers that are the hallmark of the epidermis. Lets return to the original question.
