Collagen is the strongest of the three possible fibers seen in most connective tissues. It layers in one primary direction and appears to have waves in a microscope slide. It is these waves of protein which allow the pubic symphysis to stretch during childbirth (since it is made of fibrocartilage) or a tendon to stretch during exercise warm-ups (tendons are made of dense regular fibrous tissue). This is not the answer that I was looking for, however! Lets return to the original question.
