Correct! The epidermis of a human is made of dead outer layers with living cells below. The keratinization of the outer, dead, stratum corneum provides a waterproofing function, and as the dead cells flake off, they take microbes with them. Prior to birth, the epidermis is actually nonkeratinized since we are in amniotic fluid while in utero. As adults, we then spend a large amount of time (and money) applying moisturizers to maintain that more youthful appearance! Lets return to the original question.
