Shock absorption is best accomplished with fibrocartilage pads such as those located between the medial and lateral condyles of the femur and tibia (menisci), in the pubic symphysis (that stretches with childbirth), and between vertebrae (intervertebral discs). Made of a proteoglycan matrix filled with waves of collagen, fibrocartilage pads are extremely resistant to damage, but eventually will fail if overstressed or worked excessively. This is not the answer that I was looking for, however! Lets return to the original question.
