Uploading files to Alpha via FTP and Netscape

Things to remember:

Using FTP with Netscape
  1. Netscape has limited FTP capabilities, but is still effective.
  2. Open Netscape.
  3. Click the Open button, type ftp://username@delta.edu and enter your password when prompted (username means YOUR personal username on Alpha.)
  4. When you see the listing of files and directories, scroll down to the bottom of the page, if necessary.
  5. You should see the webpages directory. Click on it. That will switch you into the webpages directory.
  6. Click on the File menu and select Upload File.
  7. The Open dialog box will appear.
  8. Find the file you wish to put on Alpha (you may have to click on the File Type list at the bottom and select All Files), select it and click the Open button.
  9. It will then be uploaded to Alpha. You'll see it appear in the list of files.
  10. Repeat Steps 6-9 as many times as necessary to upload all the files related to your web page.
  11. Do not close Netscape! View your web page next (see the section below).
View your web page
  1. Click the Open button in Netscape. Type in the URL for your web page: http://www.delta.edu/user_id and click the OK button.
  2. You should see your web page.
  3. If you are missing images, again make sure they are in the webpages directory and the case of the filename in your web page matches the filename in the webpages directory.
  4. You can use the Back and Forward buttons to toggle back and forth between FTP and your web page.
  5. Simply click on the Back button in Netscape to use your FTP session again and upload files.
  6. If you want to view your web page again, click the Forward button and click Reload to display any changes.
