TEACHING AT DELTA COLLEGEDelta College Seal

I enjoy teaching adult students, because they bring with them a rich diversity of individual life experiences to share with their fellow classmates, enriching the learning experience.  In the classroom, everyone has something to offer!

searching a prisoner..........................student discussion and problem solving

The learning experience is not a spoon-feeding of knowledge, but rather an interaction between the instructor and students and between the students themselves.  I am only facilitator in the student's pursuit of knowledge.  I believe that what a person learns has a direct relationship to what a person puts into learning.

My teaching philosophy is a resource-based, student-oriented, operationalized approach to learning; that is providing current information that integrates the theoretical and textbook with the real world in a student-friendly environment.

Student participation in class

I began teaching at Delta College in 1989 as a part-time adjunct instructor while working full-time in local corrections.  In 1999, I was hired full-time.   I am the Criminal Justice Chair and Corrections Program Coordinator, as well as teaching a full-time load of 5 corrections and criminal justice classes.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!

Education is the one thing no one can ever take from you, and it is the key to future success.  Like many Delta students,  I earned my Associate in Arts degree in Law Enforcement from Delta College while working full time.

While at Delta, I began my study of judo in the Delta College Judo Club.  As a faculty member, I have continued my study of the martial arts by beginning Tai Chi classes at Delta College and continuing in a private studio.

Delta College's Career Center assisted my in getting my first criminal justice job while still attending Delta.  The Career Center also provides other services, such as resume-building and career exploration.

Michigan State University

I transferred to Michigan State University to study Criminal Justice.   I continued to study judo in the MSU Judo Club.

I participated in Michigan State's Army ROTC  program which allowed me to gain command-level leadership training in a diversity of both field and classroom situations.   These include logistical and tactical training, field navigation, and firearms training with various semi- and fully-automatic weapons, giving me valuable experience that was useful in my criminal justice career.

SVSU CardinalSaginaw Valley State University

A job offer from a mid-Michigan Sheriff Department  brought me back to mid-Michigan.  In a transfer to Saginaw Valley State University  I studied both Criminal Justice and Sociology, eventually earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in both disciplines.

The pursuit of knowledge continued on to graduate studies at Central Michigan University, where I earned a Master of Arts degree in Social and Criminal Justice, while continuing to work full-time for the Sheriff's Office.
