Sketch, by Rosalind Mathews, depicts Mathews home formerly located at 511 S. Weadock Street in Saginaw. |
|
We lived in that house
Forty-two years.
An artist friend
Made the sketch.
A gift for our Fiftieth Anniversary.
Home, no abstract thought,
Only the concrete of dreams.
Bricks, wood, stone,
Porcelain, copper,
Children laughing.
Children crying
A pear tree,
The grape vines,
Candles and flowers,
Drapes, rugs.
Home is a kitchen sink,
A washing machine,
Piano, fireplace.
First steps of a child,
They came home bundled
In pink and blue.
They left
For school, work, service, marriage.
Home is the place you leave,
You return
In new dimensions.
That oxymoron LOVE,
Heaven and hurt.
When home is gone
The question is,
"How long should one spend
Remembering?"
