Lacunae are "little caves" seen within the lamellae (or rings) of compact bone. In the living bone, they contain the osteocytes (bone cells), but since the bone is sanded down to produce a slide (and thus the cells are all destroyed), the lacunae just appear as dark holes filled with stain. This is not the answer that I was looking for, however! Lets return to the original question.
