Take a look at the tissue magnified at 400X (high power) above. It has rings around a round centralized area. In each ring, there are smaller dark areas that contain cells and fine cracks which radiate outwards. The background material consists of a proteoglycan (protein-sugar) matrix stiffened by collagen and calcium phosphate (hyroxyapatite) crystals.
