expectations
Expectations
- Email communication
- I answer your emails in the order they are received, usually within 24
hours. I will use your Delta College email address.
- Reading
- Read through the sections that we will cover at the beginning of each
week and make notes of your questions as you read.
- Recommended problems
- Test yourself by doing the recommended problems listed on our section
outlines.
- The purpose of our recommended problems is to give you practice and
examples to help you complete the online and written homework problems
and prepare for your exams.
- Office hours
- Office hours, in-person or online, are open times for you to come and
have your individual questions answered.
- Steps to success
- Read each section that we cover.
- Work through the examples in each section.
- Work through any handouts, videos, or technology examples provided on
our website.
- Work recommended problems and homework problems together. Review posted
solutions to recommended problems and suggest additional recommended
problems that will help you with your homework problems.
- Write down your questions at each step above and get each question
answered from a reliable source (instructor, tutor, classmate, online
source, ...). A reliable source is someone who gives you a correct
explanation that you can understand.
- You need to actively ask questions.
- Assessments
- Our assessments in this course will consist of
- XYZ homework problems completed online.
- Regular written homework submitted as a PDF file.
- Three written exams taken in class.
- Homework Problems
- You may ask questions of me or any of your classmates on any
homework problem, but it is your responsibility to prepare and
submit solutions yourself.
- Written Exams
- Your exams are individual work done in our 90 minute class period.
You will need to practice doing problems correctly and promptly
to be able to do them well
- All written assessments must be submitted as a single PDF file to our
MTH-208W Assignments
folder.
- Organize and number multiple pages clearly.
- Print your full name on each page submitted.
- Include all necessary calculations, graphs, and diagrams.
- Use an appropriate scanning application such as
Microsoft Lens,
Apple Notes, or
Adobe Scan.
- Scan your documents clearly, use a bright light, and write
clearly, legibly, and darkly.
- Scan all pages in portrait orientation, full-size, fit to an
ordinary 8.5"x11" paper size.
- Photographic images with dark backgrounds will not be accepted.
- If you need assistance in the preparation of your PDF file, I will
help you learn how to use the appropriate applications.
- Technology
- The instructor will demonstrate various applications such as the TI-84
calculator, Desmos, Excel, and Google Sheets. These applicaitions or
their equivalent will be necessary to answer many questions on homework
and exam problems.
- For exams you can use a standard calculator, but no internet devices. You
will need to practice using your calculator frequently and regularly to be
comfortable using it on an exam. I would recommend that you use a TI-84.
- Assessment deadlines
- All homework deadlines are set to 11:59pm. There are five late passes
available in the XYZ Homework system. Each late pass extends the deadlines
of one homework section by 24 hours.
- Apart from the five late passes in the XYZ Homework system, no late
homework is accepted and there are no make-up exams.
- Contact me ahead of time if you have a conflict with a deadline.
- For reasonable accommodations for documented disabilities contact the

grading
Grading
- Your grade is a combination of five percentages.
- 10% of your grade will be your percentage score on XYZ homework.
- 30% of your grade will be your percentage score on written homework.
- 20% of your grade will be your percentage score on exam 1.
- 20% of your grade will be your percentage score on exam 2.
- 20% of your grade will be your percentage score on exam 3.
- Add these five products and round up to the nearest whole percentage to
determine your letter grade.
- A (93%-100%), A- (90%-92%), B+ (87%-89%), B (83%-86%), B- (80%-82%),
C+ (77%-79%), C (73%-76%), C- (70%-72%), D+ (67%-69%), D (63%-66%),
D- (60%-62%), F (0%-59%).
- Example: with overall percentages of 98.2%, 86.7%, 70.3%, 78.4%, and 72.4% on
XYZ homework, written homework, exam 1, exam 2, and exam 3, respectively,
the grade would be:
- \( 0.10(0.982)+0.30(0.867)+0.20(0.703)+0.20(0.784)+0.20(0.724)\)
\( = 0.8005 \longrightarrow 81\% \) \( \longrightarrow \) B-
- Each week I will give you a copy of your current grade report, including your
scores on all assessments taken to date, in an individual Google Drive folder.
Review your grade report to make sure that it is accurate and to know your
current grade in the course.
