MTH-208 Week 12 (March 26-April 1)

We will use the Chi-Square, \( X \sim \chi^{2}_{df} \), distribution to perform tests for "goodness-of-fit" and independence of events.
- "goodness-of-fit" - does a set of data fit a given distirbution?
- independence of events - are these events independent?
The population mean of \( \chi^{2}_{df} \) is \( \mu=df \) and the population standard deviation is \( \sigma=\sqrt{2(df)} \)
The distribution \( \chi^{2}_{df} \) has these properties
- the distribution is not symmetrical, it is skewed to the right
- the distribution is different for each value of \( df \)
- the distribution is not symmetrical, it is skewed to the right
- the test statistic is always greater than or equal to zero
- when \( df > 90 \), the distribution is approximately normal
- the mean, \( \mu \), is located just to the right of the peak of the distribution
