Uploading files to Delta's web server.

If you have created a web page, it resides on your diskette or hard disk. In order to access it on the Internet, it needs to be on the Delta College web server in an area that has been reserved for you (created during the signup process). Click here if you need an "student" account to access your e-mail and personal webpages- composed of your username and password.

To upload, you will use FTP, File Transfer Protocol (a set of instructions designed to transfer a set of files from one computer to another). For instructions on how to download a free copy of WS_FTP click here.

The WS_FTP application starts with the following window:

The small "Session Properties" window in front allows you to tell WS_FTP which computer you want to connect to and who you are. The profile name needs to be filled in as Delta. The computer you are connecting to needs to filled in as student.delta.edu(the Host Name/Address) but WS_FTP does not know who you are-fill in the User ID with your Delta College username and supply your Password that you acquried during the signup process. You may leave the Account and Comment fields blank. Do not click on the boxes called: "Anonymous" and "Save Pwd." Click on [OK].

The Session Properties window closes - the main WS_FTP window remains. It has two main parts: the Local System (the computer you are sitting at right now) is on the left - the Remote Site (the computer you connected to) is on the right. Each side shows a list of files and folders - you may need to position in the correct folder.

Let's handle the right side first. It points at your area on the Delta College web server - nothing needs to be done.

The left side will be set to a default - probably C:\ProgramFiles\WS_FTP - that means you are looking at the list of files in the WS_FTP folder that is in the Program Files folder that is on the C: hard drive. Your files may be on the A: diskette.

A list of other drives appears at the bottom of the list of files that are shown on the left side. Scroll down if necessary and double-click on the appropriate drive. Now, a list of files that are on your drive appears.

Click on the file you need to transfer over to the server.

Between the two halves of the window you will see several buttons -- > Click on the button containing the right arrow.

The files or folders you transferred should be listed on both sides - they still remain on your disk on but now copies of them appear at the remote computer.
